How to Define a MIME Type for PaleoVu |
Why Define the MIME Type?
MIME stands for Multi-purpose Internet Mail Extension, a
standard system for identifying the file type based on the files
extension. It is essential to define the MIME type correctly in
order to launch PaleoVu from the paleovu.htm web
page of this CD-ROM.
As of March 5th 1998, the following Web Browsers have been successfully tested. If you have further questions, see your Browser's help documentation.
Note: In the following instructions D: is the
CD-ROM drive. If your CD-ROM is a different drive letter,
substitute that letter for D:.
View Menu
- Options menu item (brings up Options dialog)
- In Options dialog:
- select Programs tab
- click File Types button, (brings up File
Types dialog)
- In File Types dialog:
- select File Types tab
- click New Type... button,
(brings up Add New File
Type dialog)
- In Add New File Type
dialog:
- Description of type:
PaleoVu
- Associated extension:
.pvu
- Content Type (MIME): application/x-pvu
- click New Button,
(brings up New Action
Dialog)
- click Close button
(exit Add New File Type
Dialog)
- click Okay button (exit
File Types dialog)
- click Okay (exit Options dialog)
Note: In the following instructions D: is the
CD-ROM drive. If your CD-ROM is a different drive letter,
substitute that letter for D:.
From the Start Menu, Launch Windows Explorer.
From Windows Explorer:
View Menu
- Options menu item (brings up Options dialog)
- In Options dialog:
- select File Types Tab (brings up File
Types page)
- In File Types page:
- click New Type... Button,
(brings up Add New File
Type dialog)
- In Add New File Type
dialog:
- Description of type: PaleoVu
- Associated extension:
.pvu
- Content Type (MIME): application/x-pvu
- click New Button,
(brings up New Action
Dialog)
- In New Action dialog:
- click Okay button
(exit New Action dialog)
- click OK button (exit
Add New File Type dialog)
- click Okay (exit Options dialog)

- General Preferences menu item, (brings up General
Preferences dialog)
- In General Preferences dialog:
- select Helpers tab
- click Create New Type button, (brings up
Configure New Mime type dialog)
- In Configure New Mime Type
dialog:
- Mime Type: paleovu
- Mime Sub Type: x-pvu
- click Okay button (exits
Configure New Mime Type dialog)
- File Extension: pvu
- Action: Launch the Application
- Use the Browse... button to select
paleovu.exe (Note: paleovu.exe
is located in the palvuwin directory
of the CD-ROM). Then add:
-cddrive D
to the end of the field. For example
if D: is your CD-ROM
drive, you should now have:
D:\paleovu\paleovu.exe -cddrive D
- click Okay button (exits General Preferences dialog)

substitute that letter for D:.
Edit menu
- Preferences menu item, (brings up Preferences dialog)
- In General Preferences dialog:
- select Navigator under the Category list
- select Applications under Navigator
- click Create New Type button, (brings up
Configure New Mime type dialog)
- In Configure New Mime Type
dialog:
- Description: Paleovu
- File Extension: pvu
- MIME Tpye:
application/x-pvu
- Use the Browse... button
to select paleovu.exe
(Note: paleovu.exe
is located in the palvuwin
directory of the
CD-ROM). Then add:
-cddrive D
to the end of the
field. For example if D:
is my CDROM drive, I
should now have:
D:\paleovu\paleovu.exe -cddrive D
- click Okay (exits Configure New
Mime type dialog)
- click Okay button (exits Preferences dialog)

on the CD-ROM (Note: paleovu

- Select Plain Text
- Unselect Macintosh
file
- Select Use for
incoming and Use
for outgoing
- Download to: Prompt
