This is the Japanese hiragana katakana romaji trainer program help file.

When you start the program two windows should open right away - the main with syllables (groups of characters combined by leading consonant) and the smaller one (message window). As you move the mouse over the main window look for the messages in the smaller window, they should explain the box over which you hold the mouse. When you click on the character group syllable, a window corresponding to that syllable should open. In this window you can select each character separately or all of them simultaneously (when you click on the box that says "select all"). After you select more than 4 characters, you can generate the test by clicking on the "generate now" in the main window. You can close the lesson window or you can leave it on (or reopen later). When you move the mouse over each character, romaji, hiragana, and katakana definitions appear in the message window. When you move the mouse over the line with "h r k h r k t", look at the message window. You will see:

h: click here to ask questions in hiragana
r: click here to ask questions in romaji
k: click here to ask questions in katakana
h: click here to write answers in hiragana
r: click here to write answers in romaji
k: click here to write answers in katakana
t: click here to combine both answers

By default, when you start the program, first "r" and second "h" are selected. This means that the questions will be asked in romaji and answers will appear in hiragana. Some combinations of these boxes are not allowed, for example you cannot ask questions in hiragana and answer then in hiragana; but you should be able to get all reasonable combinations like h<->r, h<->k, r<->k, h->r+k, r->h+k, and k->r+h.

You can keep as many of the character group windows open as you like and select characters from different groups at the same time. When you close the character group window your selection is remembered in the main window (until you close it) and shown there: light green for partial selection and full green when all characters from that group are selected.

The program is fully self-contained and you can get off the internet as soon as it is fully loaded (or exists in your browser's cache). All the extra windows are opened by the main window and the tests are generated on your computer.
