Slides and Notes 12-August-2011

The copy of large files to maloof last night doesn't seem to have fazed chuma much. If the max is 400MB/sec read or write to disk, then 4 such copies would max it out. Since the disk I/O is twice the Ethernet speed and the maximum Ethernet speed is about 200MB/sec (250 if you want to be picky, but that's hard to sustain), 4 copies sounds about like the limit. These are flat out large file size copies, which get much better bandwidth than copies of small files. Also notice the spike in usage at about noon today when I was testing using cp instead of rsync with another set of large files. The small file copy that followed seems not to contribute much--the bandwidth is clearly lower even with cp.
