Tape migration for 1119 DLT and sDLT data tapes ABANDON BACKUP TAPES ON OLD FORMATS. Some new calculations, based on revised capacity claims for sDLT drives. DLT-III can be read (nominally) on DLT2000XT/DLT4000/7000 drives DLT-IIIXT can be read (nominally) on DLT2000XT drives DLT-IIIXT and DLT-IV tapes can be read (nominally) on DLT4000/7000/8000 DLT-IV and sDLT-1 tapes can be read (nominally) on sDLT220/320 sDLT-1 tapes can be read (nominally) on sDLT600 and DLT-S4 drives We have a HP StorageWorks MSL5000 (sDLT?) library in storage. OR HP 302511-222 SW MSL5026SL Tape (2 driver for $15K) OR $2K for a DLT220 (1 drive) $5.5K (2 drive) Superloader for $1K or $2.5K w sDLT320 drive Not great success finding robot with DLT7000 or DLT8000 drive Assume library works (big assumption) Repurpose existing computer and LTO5 drive for facility Need storage: O(3xLTO5 capacity) = 5TB. About 130 LTO5 tapes Total days for sDLT, 24/7 = 52 Total days for DLT, 24/7 = 82 This is DLT-III, DLT-IIIXT, and DLT-IV If we can keep both drives in the sDLT-robot running almost 24/5 we can migrate in about 73 days for the sDLT times a fudge factor for exams, holidays, and failures. Nominally 10 weeks before fudges, and about 3 LTO5 tapes per week. The DLT drives would take 16 weeks, with the same fudge factors except a higher failure rate, and it would run less than 1 LTO5 tape per week. This suggests that the LTO5 tapes can be safely changed by hand on a daily basis, but that daily library loading and unloading will be needed. If we run two robots at the same time we could finish inside of 6 months (with a 50% fudge factor). Student hourly work involved: Record tape labels (may require peeling!) and unload/reload the robot Record failures, retry Unload/load LTO5 File tapes Run the read-back and checksum comparison for random files. (I assume we checksum each file before writing it to tape). Possible issues: The file size on the DLT tapes may not be ideal for LTO5. We may need to untar them and re-tar them in new file sizes. If we do that we need more space, and we should probably checksum the individual files as well.
