Event Selection

The final cuts chosen for 2005-2006 differ slightly from those applied in the 2000-2004 analysis:

We compared the point source sensitivity for the 2005-2006 data using either set of cuts.

The 2000-2004 cuts are tighter and offer better purity, whereas the 2005-2006 cuts provide better sensitivity at the horizon. To acieve the best possible event selection, we optimized event selection with a support vector machine. However, our results are only marginally better than with the 2000-2004 cuts, except near the horizon, where we find significant improvements. We choose to use the 2000-2004 cuts with a modification to correct the sensitivity loss near the horizon. We apply the 2000-2004 cut for the range
1.5o < δ < 90o and a cut on SVM output parameter for δ < 1.5o. We also apply the cut Zenith[Bayesian] < 90o to 2005 and 2006, as this indicates an error condition with the Bayesian fit. The cut eliminates 3 events.

The Final Event Sample

The final sample contains 6595 events:

The efficiency for atmospheric neutrinos (E-2) is 22.5% (33.6%) from trigger level. The contamination from downgoing muons is ~5% away from the horizon. Application of the cuts results in the following effective area and energy distributions:
